The 70273 Project™: A Back Stage Pass What do you do when a big, fat, crazy idea lands on your shoulder and whispers in your ear? You launch it 10 days later . . . before you have time to think yourself out of it. You don’t have to know the first thing about threading a needle as Jeanne gives you a backstage pass to The 70273 Project (a worldwide collaboration through which she gathers 70,273 quilt blocks to commemorate every one of the 70,273 people with disabilities Nazi physicians had murdered between January 1940 and August 1941). She’ll weave together tales of the genesis, history, and evolution of the project with stories about Aktion T4 (the top secret organization responsible for the murders). She’ll take you around the world, showing specific blocks and quilts (via slides or display or both), telling you about the people who made them, the fabrics they used, and why this project resonates so deeply with them. Her tales of The 70273 Project Tribe will restore your faith in humanity. In her own unique way of telling stories that are sometimes difficult (and yet necessary) to hear, Jeanne takes you on a safari of joy and sadness, lightheartedness and reflection, creativity, kindness, and compassion that just might leave you dabbing at your eyes every now and then . . . in a good way.

During a visit in June 2012, Nancy (Jeanne’s mentally disabled sister-in-law) began drawing and that very day, Jeanne shoved all her other cloth work aside and began stitching Nancy’s drawings. That decision resulted in unexpected consequences that are big and small, plentiful and indescribable. The relationship between the two women deepened profoundly, for example, and Nancy’s level of contentment increased at near palpable levels. Many years later, Nancy still draws and Jeanne still stitches her drawings, sometimes creating an exact replica in thread and cloth, other times taking a more abstract route. With equal parts of tenderness, respect, and mirth, Jeanne shows some of Nancy’s original drawings along with her stitched responses and shares stories and insights about the power of creative collaboration, of bearing witness, and of being Seen.

Note: This presentation is supplemented with real pieces both drawn and stitched plus photos via overhead projector.

What an astonishing experience it was when the big, fat, crazy idea now known as The 70273 Project™ first came and whispered itself to Jeanne. She could almost hear everything clicking into the perfect alignment needed to open the portal to the most lush, verdant, shining creativity she’s ever known. What did it look like? Sound like? Feel like? What did she do first? What was her “and then”? And who can forget the word-defying stupefying surprise on that fateful day when Jeanne’s mentally disabled adult sister-in-law Nancy began drawing? What was the family’s response? How did Jeanne receive these strange marks in her journal? What happened next and is it still happening? In her own candid, lively way, Jeanne will tell you all this and more, then send you on your way to set an inviting, welcoming table for your own lush, verdant, shining Creative Muse.

Jeanne’s love affair with horses came to an abrupt halt when Stranger (an aptly-named quarter horse) ignored the reins and took her right under a big ole’ branch. In her own lively style, you’ll hear right from the horse’s mouth things Jeanne’s learned and experienced while leading The 70273 Project, Inc. Using amusing anecdotes, thought-provoking tales, and regaling reflections (but no horsing around), Jeanne shares how exhilarating and life-changing it can be when you refuse to look a gift horse in the mouth and are rewarded by getting to ride a horse of a different color in the parade (even if you do have to dismount occasionally to take a stretch break, lead it to water, or clean up after it).
